Zillar Barta Desk : Presidents and senior leaders from several countries arrived at United Nations headquarters in New York as world leaders gathered for the high-level week of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs, and Romanian President Nicușor Dan were among the leaders attending events at UN headquarters.
Zelenskyy’s participation has drawn particular attention amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. He is scheduled to address the General Assembly and has also held a series of bilateral meetings with world leaders in New York.
Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa also arrived at the UN headquarters, accompanied by U.S. envoy Tom Barrack. His appearance comes as Damascus seeks to strengthen diplomatic engagement with the international community.
Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs and Romanian President Nicușor Dan are also participating in the General Assembly debate. Their speeches have focused on international security, democratic institutions and challenges facing the rules-based international order.
The arrival of the leaders highlights the diplomatic importance of the UN General Assembly, where heads of state and government are discussing major global issues, including conflicts, security, climate change and international cooperation.
