Zillar Barta Desk,Kathmandu: Nepal is observing the sacred Haritalika Teej festival amid a sombre atmosphere this year, as the country continues to grapple with the devastating aftermath of deadly floods and flash floods.
The disaster, which struck parts of Nepal in late August, caused widespread destruction, killing more than 1,300 people and leaving thousands missing. Homes, roads, bridges and vital infrastructure were badly damaged, while several hydropower projects were also affected.
Against this backdrop of grief and destruction, thousands of devotees are gathering at the revered Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu to observe Teej. The festival is traditionally marked by fasting, prayers and celebrations, with women dressed in traditional red and green attire visiting Shiva temples and praying for the well-being of their families.
The Pashupatinath Temple has introduced special arrangements to manage the large crowds. Kathmandu police said around 2,500 personnel were being deployed around the temple premises to maintain security and facilitate the movement of devotees.
However, the festive atmosphere has been deeply affected by the scale of the recent tragedy. Families across the country continue to mourn those who lost their lives, while search and rescue operations and relief efforts remain underway in several affected areas.
The floods have left behind a vast trail of destruction, with thousands of homes damaged and critical infrastructure disrupted. Nepal has also appealed for international assistance to support recovery and reconstruction following the disaster.
For many Nepalis, this year’s Teej is therefore not simply a festival of devotion and celebration. It has become a moment of prayer, remembrance and hope, as communities affected by the floods look toward recovery and rebuilding.
